Arts Scholarship Recipient Wins Award

Northern Territory music student James Tonkin has won a 2008 ‘Griffith Award for Academic Excellence’ after receiving High Distinctions in six out of eight subjects in his final year completing a Bachelor of Music Technology at Griffith University in Brisbane.

Mr Tonkin was born and raised in the Northern Territory and after completing high school at Marrara Christian College received a Northern Territory Government Arts Scholarship worth $10 500 to further his education and career as an artist.

Arts NT Program Manager Hania Radvan congratulated James on his recent achievement.

“Sound and recording engineers can be rare in the Northern Territory so we look forward to James bringing his new skills back to the Territory one day,” Ms Radvan said.

Mr Tonkin said he was thrilled to win the award and looks forward to returning to the Territory and setting up his own business one day.

“This year I’m completing honours in my degree and my thesis is about Bridging the gap: Music and Recording Authenticity in the East Arnhem Aboriginal Culture,” Mr Tonkin said.

“I hope to record Aboriginal music and produce a completely unique soundscape that fuses the music with other audio and visual technologies to reveal the deeper cultural and sociological aspects.

“Without my scholarship from Arts NT I would not have been able to support my studies so I sincerely thank them for their assistance.“

Ms Radvan encouraged other aspiring Territory artists to apply for an Arts Scholarship to help achieve their dreams.

“The Northern Territory Arts Scholarship scheme allows students to fund their arts related study costs at institutions in the Northern Territory as well as interstate institutions,” Ms Radvan said.

“We offer scholarships of up to $3 500 per year for up to three years for Territory students interested in undertaking post secondary study and can include dance, photography, music, theatre, design, fashion, performance, circus, new media, film and much more.”

Applications for the 2009 Arts Scholarship program close this Friday 30 January 2009 and are open to any young and emerging artist under 26 years at the time of applying.
