With a patronage of 32 000, memberships at an all time high and an award for best
independent cinema under the belt, the 2008 Deckchair season draws to a close -
collapsing slings on the most prosperous year to date.
A selection of 120 films were screened to just under 32 000 people. 42 of these were
first time screenings in the Northern Territory, and several were exclusive screenings
after premieres at interstate Film Festivals.
‘The showcase of films this year has been first class’ says manager and
programmer Jett Street, ‘we are fortunate to have established very strong
relationships with our account mangers, and we have secured the best titles in
the country for Darwin audiences. We are very lucky’
The strength of this unique venue was recognized at the 2008 Australian Independent
Distributors Association (AIDA) Awards Night. Deckchair Cinema received the award for
Best Independent Cinema in the NT. This is based on the films screened and patronage.
Deckchair Cinema is the only independent Cinema in Australia which is run by a non
profit committee, the Darwin Film Society. The focus is on providing a unique community
benefit rather than profits. This season memberships and admissions both increased.
“The best thing about the increase in attendance is that and extra 8000 people
experienced the Deckchair Cinema in the 2008 season. It’s a very unique aspect
of life in the tropics and one that locals and visitors alike are keen to experience’
said John Schier, Chair of the Darwin Film Society.
‘Memberships are also up by 30% which is invaluable to the sustainability of the
organization. It’s also great reinforcement that we are doing our job well,
providing a quality service to locals and film lovers.”
Deckchair Cinema provides a weekly opportunity for non profit community groups to hold
a screening and other on site activities to raise funds for their cause. In the 2008 season
26 fundraiser evenings were hosted for groups as diverse as the Sadza Safari Feed
Program and Happy Yess. These nights were very successful, taking between $1000 -
$6000 profit.
The Deckchair Cinema will reopen 22 April 2009.
