Major acts for 2008 NT Music Awards

Major acts for 2008 NT Music Awards

Music NT Inc is pleased to announce the line-up of artists who will be performing at this year's NT Indigenous Music Awards

Hosted by Ali Mills and Frank Djirrimbilpilwuy (Big Frank), the Awards will take place on Saturday 30th August at the Botanical Gardens Amphitheatre as a key event within the Darwin Festival.

Now in its fifth year, the annual ceremony and concert is itself a prestigious showcase of local talent.

"This is a great opportunity to enjoy the unique range of Indigenous talent that we are blessed with here in the Territory - and some in the line-up have lately gained international fame," Music NT Manager Mark Smith said.

"This year's Awards night is like a taste plate - we've got everything from traditional bunggul (dance), not so traditional bunggul, contemporary saltwater reggae, through to Australia's current singing sensation, Gurrumul Yunupingu."

The 2008 NT Indigenous Music Awards line-up is:

  • the Kenbi Dancers
  • WildWater
  • Muyngarnbi, Songmen Roy Ashley and Micky Hall together with Tom E Lewis performing Songs from Walking with Spirits
  • Tthe Chooky Dancers (as seen on YouTube performing Zorba the Greek), and
  • a full concert performance by Saltwater Band featuring Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.

The Awards acknowledge the achievements of the Territory's Aboriginal music performers, both in contemporary and traditional genres, and this year's presenters will include Jimmy Little, Johnny Reid, Reggae Dave and Michael Chugg from Chugg Entertainment.

"Our performers are constantly hitting above their weight as has been shown most recently with the international spotlight that has shone on the Chooky Dancers and Gurrumul," Mr Smith said.

"They will be joined on the night with long time professionals Tom E Lewis and blend of traditional song and jazz infused melodies; the popular saltwater sounds of favourite sons WildWater; and - reminding us of the genesis of this talent - the traditional performance from the Kenbi Dancers.

"This is a very special night of entertainment, a real treat for locals and visitors alike. And it's great value as this year we are offering a discount deal for patrons attending Gurrumul's Darwin Festival performance at the Star Shell on the previous night - even more reason to join us in celebrating such fantastic talent," Mr Smith said.
