THE ECONOMY MIGHT BE IN RECESSION – BUT NT MUSIC IS BOOMING! Just for starters… • NT soul singer Jessica Mauboy took out the coveted ‘Best Aussie’ gong at the MTV Australia Awards, March 27. • Flanked by great reviews from Q, The Times and Mojo UK, Indigenous star Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunipingu - and his band of talented musicians Michael Hohnen, Francis Diatschenko and Erkki Velheim - will perform in the UK in May, headlining at London’s prestigious Union Chapel followed by Europe’s leading New Music Festival, “The Great Escape”, Brighton. Gurrumul will also perform at the ‘Dreamtime at the G’ AFL match in Melbourne on May 23. • Three NT bands take to the stage at the prestigious Byron Bay Bluesfest, April ‘09: Worldfly, Yilila and NT music icons Saltwater Band, with original band member Gurrumul. • Nine NT artists release brand new music: internationally acclaimed NT band Worldfly launch their latest album ‘It’s Too Late To Turn Back” April 10 at Darwin Entertainment Centre; wunderkinds The Aviators have just released EP ‘Here There Everywhere’ with a great remix of single ‘Your Blues’; blues/roots troubadour Mark Hilton currently wowing audiences on national tour for his fourth album ‘A Good Man’; Central Australia’s Tjupi Band have just released their second album ‘Kutju Ngarala’ (Standing Alone) where they further explore their unique desert reggae; noise/melodica three-piece Red Plum & Snow take it to the limit with their first EP released at the recent Adelaide Fringe, as did ‘ones to watch’ Jess Ribeiro & The Bone Collectors, with EP ‘Pilgrimmage’ their first CD offering; alt-folk darlings Country Town Collective also launched their first album ‘Houses’ at the Fringe, a delicate collection of sad songs and steamy blues, and Darwin all-grrl hiphop stars 2 Cats 1 Hat have just finished their first album, ‘Okay.. Hello (Come Here Tom)’, a funk-riddled debut of back beats, phat bass lines and excellent rhymes. And out online this week a covers EP from Blastcorp, the solo electonica outfit of NT music iconoclast, Kris Keogh. • ‘Long Way To The Top End’ Tour: 14 Darwin bands showcase at the 2009 Adelaide Fringe a great success. • ‘Jam In The Wet’ @ Studio 93, DEC: media-partnered by ABC Local Radio and programmed by Music NT, this season of dynamic, original NT artists was extemely well-supported by local audiences.
