Voting is now open for the People’s Choice category of this year’s NT Indigenous Music Awards. And for the first time, Territorians can use SMS to vote for their favourite song. Hosted by Music NT Inc, the Awards acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the Territory’s Aboriginal music performers, both in contemporary and traditional genres. “Where as the other award categories rely on nominations only from people working within the NT Music Industry, the People’s Choice Award is an opportunity for everyone to cast a vote,” Music NT Manager Mark Smith said. “With increasing mobile phone coverage out bush and the introduction this year of voting by text messaging, we’re hoping for a big response to the People’s Choice Award. “Ads are currently being run on major Indigenous and regional media outlets such as TEABBA, CAAMA, Radio Larrakia and Territory FM - so it’s easier than ever to support local acts and vote for your favourite song.” Winners of the 2008 NT Indigenous Music Awards will be announced at a gala event on Saturday 30th August at the Botanical Gardens Amphitheatre. The Awards night is a major part of the 2008 Darwin Festival and this year’s lineup of key Indigenous acts will include Saltwater Band from Galiwin’ku. A full list of performers will soon be announced. SMS voting in the People’s Choice category can be made by sending a message to 0417 808 181. Last year’s winning song in the People’s Choice Category was Bushfire by Nabarlek. The 2008 award categories are:
